What do you feel are the most important topics in chapters 3 and 4 as related to digital storytelling? Are you feeling more or less anxious about utilizing the technology for storytelling as we get a wee bit further in the text? If time were not an issue (hahahahahahahahahahaha, time is always an issue but hey, this is our blog so let's dream a little!), what might you do with digital storytelling? Remember to respond to your peers!!!
I was able to understand DST a little better after reading section about the DAOW Chart of Literacy. The Value of (D)Digital Literacy, (A)Art Literacy, (O)Oral Literacy and (W)Writing. I was able to understand the value of each and how each must inter-relate with each other.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I am feeling more anxious about using it with 1st graders, but I am ready to try. I have researched some ideas online about DST and I am ready to try one.
Our field trip to the aquarium is coming up in Nov. so I have an idea of how I want to incorporate ocean animals into DST. I will let you know how it goes or better yet I might show you!
I am a bit anxious about using it in my classroom. I would love to see your example. That might help me to feel a bit better about it. :)
DeleteAngie, Please share you example of how you are incorporating this in your classroom. I don't know why but I am having a hard time understanding this book and what it involves. I feel like I've just had a brain freeze on it! Lol I told Mrs. Burns that I needed "pull-out" for this book.
DeleteI can't wait to see your video!!!
DeletePlease share!
DeleteI felt like the most important topics from chapter 3 was the fact that content, technology, and language arts standards were covered as digital storytelling is used as an educational tool. I also thought the part about art literacy was important because people who are art challenged could still be successful while using digital tools. In chapter 4, I liked the fact that it listed the Digital Story Evaluation Traits. This could be used as a rubric while assessing Digital Storytelling. If time were not an issue I would like to incorporate Digital Storytelling in lessons in my classroom. I am still very anxious about doing any more technology with my students at this time.
ReplyDeleteI will be looking for Angie to share her ways to incorporate ocean animals into DST!
ReplyDeleteChapter 3 went into depth about the three standards of content, technology, and language arts. It is definitely important for students to be able to understand what they are doing at grade level, we work on that daily. Technology has become such an important part of our daily schedule; I look back now and wonder what we did without all these “baby laptops”. However, I do know that evaluating assignments would cause us to formulate rubrics, Chapter 4, and other tools to help us if we chose to grade them formally. Media literacy is still in the beginning stages for our students and it would be necessary for us to continue to model how to create media, then to consider the legal issues involved in borrowing another person’s work from the internet. This could take a goodly amount of time. Language Arts standards are incorporated in our lessons daily and we would need to continue writing, editing, and publishing works on paper in the classroom. We can’t assume that all of our children have had experiences with literacy activities before they entered school. I really liked the DAOW of Literacy chart shown in Chapter3, this really put it all in perspective for me, gives me a visual that shows what all is involved. I am still nervous about doing this with my children, but maybe, once I get started, things will fall into place. I am eager to see what Angie does with her children.
ReplyDeleteI am having a hard time understanding this book too. I am even more anxious about using DST in my classroom than ever. Technology is an important part of our instruction in the classroom now and is becoming even more so. However, having the time and patience to instruct young children is a major concern of mine. Overwhelmed is an understatement as to how I feel. Teaching reading and math take-up the majority of my time. I understand that DST would be a great activity to do with my class and I am looking into ways to incorporate it into my lessons.
ReplyDeleteI have to be honsest. This book has been very confusing to me. I’ve read it and went back and read it again. Isn’t that one thing we teach our students? Anyway, during my second read, I was thinking some of this sounds “old school” to me and after finally getting the gist of it, I realized that it is a little “old school.” The first time, I read the chapters, I kept thinking this sounds a lot like powerpoints or any other type of digital presentation. After reading it the second time, I realized that “Wow!” It is or can be what I have been used to for years with additional things added to it. I ‘m used to creating powerpoints or prezis but hopefully this book will help me understand ways that will make presentations for students better. Since, I am one of the sponsers for the KES Tech Team, this will definitely be beneficial for me. I also liked reading about Art and how by using digital storytelling in the classroom, we can incorporate art in our lessons. On a side note, since Nikki is in Art School, I really enjoyed reading the part about Art being a business now and how it has better pay. Lol So, I haven't been feeling anxious about the technology. I've been feeling anxious about understanding the book.
ReplyDelete"honest" I thought I had proofread!
DeleteI feel nervous when the book's discussions include 'green screens' and voice overs, etc. I'm not clear on how to use those technologies and I'm pushed for time just to get reading and math taught, progress monitor AND help the students log in and STAY logged in to their laptops for Ticket to Read, AR, IXL, or Starfall.....! I think anything I could do with first graders would have to be very much teacher led and put together by the teacher at this point. What I can imagine being able to do would be a class project about a topic with still pictures, text, and perhaps some music. I do have an idea, but it will take some time and on the technology side it would be mostly me putting it all together. So I'm not sure that is the point.....but also the kids need some background experience and models, so that in the future they will be better able to form their own digital stories. I think it would help me to
ReplyDeleteSEE some examples of digital stories rather than just read about them. My feelings are very mixed....uneasy, stressed, could be fun, but what about time, uncertain, could be interesting.......??? We'll see!
Donna, I also feel nervous about how to make a digital story especially using the "green screens" and voice overs! I also think that I need to see examples of digital stories, and I need more instruction and time before I do this with my students.
DeleteI agree Donna, I think it would help me to see some examples of digital stories.
DeleteI Agree! I need to SEE an example! I am much better at just seeing and trying something instead of reading about it :-)
DeleteI am one of those try and try again and if all else fails I will read the directions
I also agree that there is a need for a hands-on guided practice or a visual model for me to successfully incorporate DST in my instruction.
DeleteI understand that technology is a daily part of my students' lives, and that digital storytelling would be an excellent way for them to demonstrate content knowledge, grammar (language) skills, and to demonstrate their creativity (art). It would also provide them with skills necessary for the work force, but it makes me nervous to think about teaching and guiding my third grade students in this process. This is because I have never completed a digital story myself, and at this point in reading the book, I still don't have a clear understanding of how to make a digital story. As far as grading these digital stories, I probably would not know where to start! I did like the fact that the book mentioned that I could grade the students' written work before they had produced their digital stories. Also, the content of the stories themselves would be easy to grade. I do see the benefits of including the production of digital stories in my lessons, and I know that I will probably allow my students to create a digital story at some time during the school year. I could actually see my class as a whole producing one digital story on a particular topic that we have been studying during the school year. Maybe after I read more of this book, I will have a better understanding of how to produce a digital story, but I will probably still need more instruction and time to make this a success in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteI thought the section that talked about the DAOW of literacy in Chapter 3 was important. I liked the way it explained how each part is involved in digital stories. In the section about the Value of Writing I liked how it said “having students write for media is an effective way of slipping writing in under the radar.” Many times students decide at a young age that they do not like writing but this is a way for them to write and enjoy it and they do not realize they are learning. I am also still a little anxious about the digital stories. Like Mrs. Kinsey said this would have to be more of a group project for kindergarten but I really think the students will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI agree on a group project! and maybe this would help them take pride in their work and not just scribble something down!
DeleteI agree. I see this as a group project with K students. I'm sure they would love it.
DeleteI agree that students at an early age decide they do not like writing and if we can find ways to make it fun for them, they might realize they can enjoy writing.
DeleteI agree with Jessica. I thought the section that talked about the DAOW of literacy in Chapter 3 was important. The way it explains how each part is involved in digital stories was very helpful. In Value of Writing it discusses how many times students decide at a young age that they do not like writing but having them write for media is a way for them to write and enjoy it and they do not realize they are learning. I am also still a little confused, nervous, anxious about the digital stories. Like Mrs. Kinsey and Mrs. Hendricks said I agree this would have to be more of a group project for kindergarten!
ReplyDeleteYes, I have to agree this book is very challenging. I also found it very hard to understand. However,I did find the DAOW of Literacy to be a little more on my level. I am still a little nervous about using DST. There are several laws that we must be careful about. I feel this would need be a one on one project with each student.
ReplyDeleteI am also having a difficult time processing the information from this book and actually visualizing how this will all work in my classroom. I feel like it will involve a great deal of time to explain all the aspects of DST including how to add pictures, text, and music. If there were only about 18 more of me this could go very smoothly. Lol! That way I could teach my students one to one. I understand that we are in a digital world and technology in a very important part of our students’ daily learning. Due to the time issues, I agree with Ginger that having my class do one digital story is probably a more feasible idea. Perhaps after seeing an example of a digital story and reading more of the book I will feel more comfortable with DST.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 3 the author pointed out how kids can do so much without training or trouble. And I like how it said that technology is just intelligent furniture! They are so use to it and have never been without it! I think the kids will really enjoy seeing their ideas and what we are learning put into a Digital story but I am a little nervous about putting it all together. I agree with Ms. Kinsey, I think for the younger kids it will be mostly teacher led and put together.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Mrs. Kinsey also. I think it will be more teacher led and put together with the younger ages.
DeleteChapter 3 discusses the effectiveness of DST in education. After reading and re-reading this chapter I can see how this can reach multiple levels of instuction. I now have a better understanding of the DAOW of Literacy and how DST can tie all the concepts together. In chapter 4 assessment traits are discussed. I am glad a list of these traits were included. This will make developing a rubric easier. Like many of the others blogged, I am very nervous about trying DST. The information in the book is good but very difficult for me to process. I am hopeful that as we continue the picture of DST is made more visual for me. I would enjoy seeing a sample and/or having some hand-on instruction or collaborating with someone.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapters 3 & 4 what is important to me is how technically capable do I feel I need to be to use new media in my classroom? After reading chapter 3, it tells me that a non-technically savvy teacher with an open mind and good classroom management skills can be very successful in a digital age classroom. I feel that I have an open mind however I still have that “BUT” in the back of my mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to remain calm and positive! Seriously, journals have always been one of my favorite things to do with my children. I love to see their writing (storytelling) skills evolve. However, I am a little overwhelmed with DST. Chapters 3 & 4 were helpful because of the standards covered. I too agree that if I saw an example I would have a better understanding. I am sure that the more we get into the book, the clearer DST will become.
ReplyDeleteI had to reread the chapters because I was just a wee bit confused. I think we have come a long way with our use of technology at KES but when I read this and started thinking about digital storytelling, I became a little nervous. I would love to see this instead of just reading about it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with many of you about having trouble understanding this book. In Chapter 3,it discusses how traditional storytelling is highly regarded as a powerful tool for helping students develop literacy skills. DST extends this into digital domain. I am nervous about DST and I feel like this would have to be more of a group project for Kindergarten. I also feel like some of you that it would be very helpful if I saw an example of DST.
