Chapters 5, 6, 7

Are you ready to begin Digital Storytelling w/your students? Any parts of it? Why or why not? Could you partner with another teacher and begin? Why or why not? Would that be easier or harder?

  1. No, I don’t feel ready to begin DST with my students. I would really like to have PD on this to see how this will work with my students. I’m having a hard time actually visualizing how this will work in the “real” classroom. I’m sure once I have a better understanding it will be fine. Much like how I couldn’t quite see how integrating the 1:1 technology would work, but I absolutely love it now. Partnering with another teacher could be beneficial to have 2 teachers to help the students. Especially if one class had already done DST and those students could be paired with a peer to help explain how to do DST.

    1. I agree with Macie. I would feel more comfortable working with another teacher on this project. This would be most beneficial if we could be paired with a group who has experienced this before.

    2. I think that pairing with another teacher would be beneficial. I have started some skits with my students and plan to record them but have no idea if what I'm planning to do is what the author calls "digital storytelling."

    3. Alison, I agree that I would like to be paired with another teacher or teachers to complete a digital story. I have also planned to video my students doing a report, but I don't know if this is a digital story or not.

  2. At this time, I am not ready to begin a Digital Story with my students. For me, this has been a complex reading because the context does not reach out and hold my interest. I find myself reading the chapters over and over trying to get a better understanding of what the author is trying to portray. I know it would be easier for me to work with a partner.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I've had to reread several parts of the text myself to try to understand it. I feel that using peer tutors on this project could be very beneficial for both the students and the teachers.

    2. I feel the same way. I find myself reading and rereading to try and understand.

    3. You all are not alone. I have to reread the text multiple times and I am still not sure I am getting the meaning of some of the material. I would like to view a sample that has been created in an elementary classroom. I think I could make a better connection to the text.

    4. I agree Donna. I can read the material and not understand anything that I have read. I go back and reread and sometimes I'm still not sure.

    5. I have read and reread but am still a bit confused. I decided to Google search "what is digital storytelling" and watched a video from http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/. This really helped give me a visual idea and allowed me to think about what I could do with my students, but still trying to decide what topic would be best for me and my classroom.

  3. I am working on a lesson with DST. I am almost ready to record. I do think it would be better to pair with a partner teacher (maybe with 3rd grade and with someone that has already completed a DST lesson). I agree with Alison I am ready to try it, but I have no idea if what I am planning is right?

  4. At this time I am not fully ready to create a DS. I think I have an idea of what I should do with the students, but like some of the others I am not sure if my understanding of DST is correct. I think my GT students will enjoy the challenge. I plan to research more information of DS to ensure I am on the right path with this lesson.

    1. This article helped and gives ideas and examples for pre-k and up. http://digitaldollar.edublogs.org/2011/05/02/digital-storytelling-for-beginners/

    2. Thanks Mandi. Having the examples, especially Bird Tales, helped.

    5. Thanks for sharing the examples!

  5. I think I need to just come up with an idea and try something. After looking at Mandi's article, I think my class can do a very simple illustrated version of DST. I think working with another teacher could be helpful.

  6. I agree with you, Jean. Maybe we just need to try. I would like to partner up with another teacher and maybe we could be successful with DST together. Now, to come up with a good topic/subject. I do have some ideas that I will toss out to my buddies and we will see what our combined efforts produce.

  7. I agree. I think pairing with another teacher and trying a DST would diffidently help. I don't feel comfortable with DST to do this with my class. Thanks for the articles and videos. They were more on my level.

  8. I also agree, I think it would be helpful to partner with another teacher and work on DST together so we could share ideas about it. The article also helped me to understand DST a little better. It always helps for me to see an example.

  9. My class read a Pecos Bill Tall Tale as a readers’ theater. I recorded it with my flip camera and we played it back. My problem is I am not sure if this is considered DST. I enjoyed it, but the kids enjoyed it so much more. I think working together would be beneficial at first. I need more clarification. Can DST be the presentation of a skit or play? In this case it was already written for them. We just assigned parts and practiced reading with expression before recording. DST seems to be so much more. I think I have missed something in the reading.

    1. I agree with Sharron that I don't really understand how to create a digital story. Is it simply a video of my students reading or presenting a report? Does it have to be something (like artwork) created by my students? I'm not sure that I understand either.

  10. At this time, I do not think that I am ready to do DST with my students. I think that I need more instruction on how to complete a digital story. Even after reading this book, I am still confused about how to create a digital story. I need someone to demonstrate how to create a digital story. I do think that it would be helpful for me to work with one or more teachers to create a digital story. I need to work with someone who has more experience than I do to create my first digital story with my students. Creating a digital story sounds like it would be very beneficial and interesting for my students, but I do not feel like I am prepared to do this with my students without more instruction or help.

    1. It would help my comfort zone too if I saw a demonstration or at least some examples!

  11. I agree totally with Ginger. I am not ready to begin digital storytelling with my students. Confused and baffled are my middle names at this moment. Am I to include art work along with a story? Also, can it be as a whole group or does it need to be as individual students? Further training would be greatly appreciated. I do see the advantages of using it in the classroom, but only if I and my students are comfortable with it.

  12. I think pairing with another teacher while we "get our feet wet" with digital storytelling is an excellent idea. I think our students can do more than we give them credit for. I think we are more hesitant than the students. haha

  13. I think it would be helpful to partner with another teacher. I am confused and working with someone else could really help. The article Mandi shared was really helpful..

  14. I also think it would be be helpful to partner with another teacher.

  15. I am not sure I am ready for all of this but help from a partner is definitely a great idea!

  16. Well, I do have an idea - but I'm not sure if it would really be a true DST project or just a slide show of sorts. I guess I could at least try what I have in mind after Christmas. It would still at least be a mini unit for the students, so it won't HURT them! LOL I would still like to see some examples....there may be some online, but I just haven't had time to search for any! AGAIN, there is that TIME factor!!! As for partner work - sorry but I have never been great with partner or group work. It is easier for me usually to work around my own schedule. But if needed, I will work with a partner.
