I read your comments where several of you feel that you aren't "getting" this so I looked online and discovered this resource for you. It steps you through how to have YOUR STUDENTS create digital stories. From creating the storyboards to what you need to download (MovieMaker or Photo Story) to be successful, it's all there. I also found a "how to" article for you at the following: www.edutopia.org/digital-storytelling-classroom so check it out. Then finish the book, find a teacher friend (if you need one!), and let's have students create digital stories. Please email the student's digital stories to me when you have completed them (students may certainly work together on this!!! Whatever works!!!). Blog about how well this works or doesn't work within your classroom. Remember we have digital cameras in the KES library for checkout.
Digital Storytelling worked well and was a group effort between Motley, Smith, and myself. We involved our students by having them write sentences about Belal. We selected the best works and then recorded the students reading their stories. Wevideo is a great tool and allowed us to create our video with audio and graphics and offered several other options. We also tried Animato but were unable to add audio. Our teacher laptop is equipped with a camera and a microphone so we were able to use it without having to incorporate any other devices. The whole process was pretty easy and we were very pleased with our finished project.
ReplyDeleteMy students really enjoyed writing about Belal and then being recorded for the video. I believe this project was an overall success for our classes (Motley, Davis, and myself) and reinforced what we have been discussing about being kind to others.
DeleteMacie, I would love to see the video.
DeleteMy students really seemed excited about being recorded. They wrote down on paper what they wanted to say about Belal. Then, I allowed them to practice.
ReplyDeleteI agree it was a successful reinforcement of what we have been discussing about how to treat others.
Second grade teachers worked together to create a digital story about bullying. First, students collaborated to write skits on bullying. Then, they practiced the wrong way and right way to handle a bully. After that, the students were videoed using the dell webcam. This was a successful project. Everyone seemed to enjoy seeing themselves on video.
ReplyDeleteSounds great! I would love to see the video.
DeleteMy students loved digital storytelling they all had the opportunity to make up their own cartoon about bulling. I have to say I was impressed. Some of the stories they told you could tell came from the heart. They all had the chance to share with me and with the other students in the classroom. I look forward to doing this again with other subjects.
ReplyDeleteI can’t say this didn't work in my classroom because I was nervous about this project from day one. I tried to be as positive as I knew how but I was nervous. My students seemed to have enjoyed making the digital story. After watching the digital story with my students, I realize how low my students’ voices were. It seemed like they had remembered to use their inside voices. (lol)
ReplyDeleteWe used "StoryBoardThat" and created bullying scenarios. Since this was our first we chose to go simple. Students chose characters, settings, and different type speech balloons. Students created their own scripts, since there was no sound. Students enjoyed it and even got parents involved and did others at home. We were able to share and printed some for display inside and outside our classroom.
ReplyDeleteLike Sharron, Shannon, and Alison, my class also used "StoryBoardThat" to create digital stories. The children had to create the backgrounds, characters, and balloons with script. Since we have been focusing on bullying, the children created stories about bullying situations and how to stop them. Most of the children created at least six frames for their storyboards. I thought that their stories were creative, and this was an excellent opportunity for them to practice creating a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Also, writing is such an important skill for third grades (especially for the ARMT) that this was a great way for the children to practice correctly writing sentences. They had to correctly use capital letters and end marks. The children created these storyboards independently, and I was pleased with their work. Many of the children sent their storyboards to Dr. Hendon and to Mr. Marcum. I also printed their storyboards and have them on display in the third grade building. Using "StoryBoardThat" was a good way for me to begin to use digital stories in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteFor the Digital Storytelling project, my students created stories using www.storyboardthat.com about bullying. Each student created a story about a different bullying situation and a solution to the problem. The stories were later made into PowerPoint presentations and shared with their parents via email.
ReplyDeleteMy students really enjoyed making our digital story. We created a story about the 3 types of clouds. We researched and did activities with all 3 types, but my class used the Stratus Clouds to use for our digital story. Mrs. Hill's class did Cirrus Clouds and Mrs. Meinzer's class did Cumulas Clouds. At the end we put all three cloud types together to make one digital story. The children had fun going outside and making pictures with my camera. They enjoyed researching the different clouds. This project was fun and exciting for the children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mrs. Johns. Our classes worked well together both with the concept of bullying and the actual video. All of the children seemed to enjoy either acting in the video or watching it. Mrs. Johns did a great job working with the "actors".
ReplyDeleteMy class used MovieMaker to tell our story about groundhogs. They researched them, watched videos, and then wrote (as a class)a factual story about groundhogs. They loved it and I hope they learned to work together a little better during the process. Having the time to do this was sometimes a challenge, but it was fun and very educational for them.
ReplyDeleteMy class used www.littlebirdtales.com to tell our story about groundhogs. They really enjoyed making our digital story and LOVED watching themselves!
ReplyDeleteMy class also used www.littlebirdtales.com to create a digital story about community helpers. They picked which community helper they want to be and drew a picture. They really enjoyed making it and we have watched it over and over again!
